Papa Tom Visits

Papa Tom came to town for a visit and Jamie has the week off.
They went to the beach.
(Snack Time)

Played at the park.

And not pictured: AM and Papa Tom's big truck. She was fascinated by Papa's truck. Eating out at two of our favorite restaurants - Burma SuperStar and Ti Couz. A Giants Game for Jamie and his Dad. And AM not napping for her father.

The Weekend, Recapped

In an effort to be healthy I made some granola Saturday morning. I felt a little hippy dippy making my own granola, but this stuff is worth it. I'll post the recipe soon.
Later that afternoon we headed to the GVZ's for Norah's birthday bug bash. Annmarie had a blast and I let her have not one but two mini cupcakes. I think Janet did some sugar alternative substitute stuff for the kids cupcakes (she does things like that), so I thought why not. And when AM wasn't pushing around the baby play strollers she actually played with some of Norah's cool pals. It was a great day for a party and fun was had by all. And Janet - Jamie was mildly obsessed with the mango salsa. Did you make it?
Later that evening Jamie embarked on making Ant's ribs. It's a process to say the least. And I'm a little bummed because there are definitely no vampires coming to this house, due the amount of garlic that is used in this recipe. My house may never smell the same again. This may not bode well for the upcoming Eclipse party. Oh yes, the count down is on. I realize the blog has been Twilight shy for a bit, but no need to fret, Edward will be coming out soon. I'm amidst re-reading Eclipse to get back in the vibe and I just finished reading the The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner: Eclipse Novella. I liked it.

Anyway back to Jamie's ribs...

Here is the prep on Saturday night.
Here they are right before they went into the oven to be anchor 'steamed' for three and half hours.
After the steam bath.
And the finished product. Probably not so healthy. Not sure how I went from granola to ribs. But oh where these good. I'll look into the copyright protections on the rib recipe and maybe I'll post it.Jamie's Dad joined us for dinner and Annmarie enjoyed her bedtime stories this evening with Papa Tom.
Ok - the end.

The Relay 2010 - Guest Blogged by Bonnie

Jamie planned to blog about The Relay this year and well, he never got around to it. So I got permission from Bonnie to use her pictures and commentary that she posted on Facebook. I've condensed her post and removed nekkid pictures of my husband.

I'd like to add that while I think The Relay is crazy and insane, I admire everyone's dedication. I think it's a remarkable feat and I tip my hat to all the Barbarians.

So here you go - The Relay by Bonnie

One charitable donation-check
One full moon weekend-check
Two passenger vans-check
Water, cytomax, PB pretzels, etc.-check
199 miles of road/trails-check
Ten bad-ass runners-check
Location: Calistoga to Santa Cruz
Team Barbarians-The Relay 2010. A little team drama this year with injuries and such but we prevailed.
Despite Jamie's pelvic injury-he was able to run leg 1-here he is warming up.
Jams flexing his calf muscles. Jamie's nemesis is Team Skirt (an all female team). Due to questionable tactics by this team during past Relays-Jamie has developed a very strong hatred for them (and of running skirts in general).
And he's off! First one out of the gate.
Rachel - Dressed in kick-ass running gear and armed with a full hour of This American Life-Rachel starts leg 2.
Couldn't resist.Joe running wearing my sunglasses and listening to This American Life. Joe ran the longest leg for Van 1-7.4 miles in about 80 degree heat. Since he doesn't think anything compares to Texan heat-we had no problem assigning him this leg.

Joe, "I will not let them see me sweat in California," Mencher.
Wonder twin power exchange!
We all came to The Relay for different reasons. For some of us it was to run farther (Roger), run faster (me), challenge our endurance (Rachel), test our threshold for pain (Jams), see if the race lived up to the hype (Joe), check out the ladies (Jason), etc. Schultz? Well-for Schultz it was all about the fashion and looking fly. BTW-those aren't compression socks.
Rural running-I was the only person on the team who ran all their legs during the daylight hours.
The sun sets...
Armed with another podcast of This American Life, Rachel is ready for her 2nd leg.
We told Rachel there was bacon at the end of her leg. She got excited.
Doing the robot.
Ready for the runway. Tim Gunn-eat your heart out.
Delay in pictures as I slept through most of the morning. This was after I finished my leg in Saratoga, I think. We had maybe 2 hours of sleep?
No boogers. That's a first.
Schultz's casual look.
Roger was running the last (and toughest) leg for our van. He called Jamie shortly after staring due to a knee injury. Jams was at his best-he gets the call, screams "Roger's down!" Strips off his clothing to change and saves the day.

Roger was not actually, "down," he kept running but had sharp pains in his knee.

Our last exchange.
2010-a success!

Great job!

The Barbarians finished in 28:05:48 placing 43rd out of 212 teams.

Dads

A good part of our day was spent cleaning out our garage space. The perfect Dad job! We did find time to have a great pancake breakfast, barbecue steaks, drink margaritas, and talk to my Dad via their new web-cam.

I so appreciate the Dads in my life.

Happy Father's Day to my own Dad!
And to Jamie - Annmarie and I think you are the best. We love you - mean it!

Angela Reads: Recent Reads

A Long Way Gone - Great book. Heartbreaking. Worth the read.

Unaccustomer Earth - Award winning - as it should be. Huge fan of Jhumpa Lahiri.

Shanghai Girls - Not my favorite book by Lisa See. It started out great and then it lost something for me.

Beat by an 8 year old

Yesterday was the 100th running of the Dipsea race. Until about a month ago, I had not even planned on running this year’s race since I’ve been slightly banged up with hip and Achilles issues since February. However I successfully gained entry through the lottery system and then was bumped to Invitational status since I had been so close to qualifying last year. Finally, after reading a great feature on the race in the June issue of Runners World, I became determined to run injured or not. I wasn’t going to set any personal bests…I ran 1:11 last year, so if I could run a 1:20 this year I’d be happy.

So I ran. It was hot and the course tougher than hell, as usual. I walked a lot up the Dynamite and Hogsback and Cardiac sections, and saw the usual trail carnage…some with heat exhaustion, some with hard falls, and one dude who had flown at least 15 feet off the trail and was so deep in the jungle brush that I honestly didn’t believe he could have flown that far off the trail. I finished the race in a respectable 1:16:33 and was very happy with that, and then ran into my long lost Freshman year roommate at the finish. Overall a great day for me. But my stories really are not all that interesting. The real story of the day was about Reilly Johnson of Mill Valley, the 8 year old girl who handed each and every one of us our collective asses by becoming the youngest winner of the race. And she did it in style…by out-sprinting 3 time Dipsea champion, Tamalpan, and part-time Australian residence Melody Ann Schultz to win by 8 seconds (and yes, I’ve already hit Melody up for running club referrals in Australia). As I said last year, this race is bad ass, and an 8 year old girl just proved it in the most anticipated race in Dipsea history…the 100th running. About as inspiring as anything I’ve ever witnessed in running. Don’t let the smile and pigtails fool you, she’ll take you down and make you wish you never woke up this morning!

Crikey!

(Jamie - April 2005)
Friends and Family,

We hope you have all been well, and wanted to share some news with you. We’re moving to Australia! Well, for a little while at least. I’ve been offered an opportunity with Autodesk to relocate to Sydney for a few years to take a position that is very similar to what I’m doing now. The stars seem to be aligned, and this is the perfect time in our lives to do something crazy like move to another country. Angela will be leaving her job in August and is excited to spend more time at home with Annmarie while we’re living down under. For the next few months, I’ll be “commuting” to work, spending 2-3 weeks in July and 1-2 weeks in August in Sydney, before relocating full-time in early September. Until then, we’ll be turning our lives upside down, doing some spring cleaning and getting rid of all the junk we’ve accumulated over the last 8 years while living in San Francisco, and then trying to find some tenants to rent our place while we’re gone. So if you’re looking for a 2 bedroom place in the city for a few years…give me a call!

The most difficult part of all this will obviously be leaving all of you, our family and friends for so long. However, if you’ve ever had the itch to take a trip down under, now is the time to do so…please come and see us! We’ll be more than happy to accommodate you, and we’ll be looking to rent a house with an extra guest room in the hopes that we do have lots of visitors. Flights are surprisingly affordable during the off-peak season (non-Christmas), and we’re swell tour guides if you want to make the trip. Seriously, we’ll need lots of help putting shrimp on the barbie!

If you’d like to follow our adventures, please visit our blog.

Cheers,
Jamie, Angela & Annmarie

The Weekend – Recapped

The weekend started off with celebrating Jamie’s birthday. The three of us went to Serpentine for a nice dinner. We then headed over to the new organic ice cream cafĂ© that is right across the street from us – Mr. and Mrs. Miscellaneous. This could be scary. We picked up a little vanilla bean to go with a brownie tart I made for Jamie. Yum.
(Shh: Pictures of the brownie tart were totally staged on Sunday. Forgot to take pictures on Friday.)

Saturday morning I made Jamie oatmeal pancakes. Star Wars oatmeal pancakes! They were a little pain in the tush to make, but felt like I should do a little something special for him since I had a girls date night planned.
I went out with some girlfriends for drinks, food and S&TC. Some may consider this selfish (since it was Jamie's birthday weekend), but the way I look at it, is I did him favor by not dragging him to see the movie. Somehow I convinced him to see the first movie with me and he rolled his eyes no fewer than 3,000 times and he may have fallen asleep.

Jamie and Annmarie went to have dinner at Uncle Jon’s house.
Sunday we put Jamie on a plane to Japan. And Annmarie and I went to a darling baby shower.
Whew - it was a busy and fun weekend.
